This chapter reviews software for viewing and modifying Video, including DVDs, and the set up of software for particular video chip sets.

A clean install of Debian GNU/Linux is most likely to find your DVD-R, DVD-RW, or DVD-ROM drives without the need for you to do anything. If not, then the information in Section 14.1 might be useful. For information on CDs, including audio and data reading and writing, see Chapter 14.

The k3b KDE burner provides a very easy to use and intuitive interface to burn data DVDs. While it is KDE based, it will work just fine under Gnome.

To backup DVD movies use acidrip to generate an AVI (see Section 93.4.1). This can be converted to SVCD with ripmake (see Section 93.4.3).
