Use hotplug and udev with gnome-volume-manager to have a nice system to automatically mount removable devices when they are plugged in. For gnome-volume-manager this needs to be run in your session, and the users need to be in group plugdev. Note that this works best when you run a single X-session at a time (which is the common scenario, rather than having two or more users with concurrent X-sessions on different tty's).
