next up previous contents index

The kernel is, as the name suggests, the core of the operating system of the computer. The kernel is constantly under development to add new functionality of to improve performance. Installing a new kernel is often the only time you need to reboot your computer.

In this chapter we will review various kernel versions (and issues associated with these versions) and then provide a recipe to compile your own kernel, which you may want to do to have a kernel specific for your own needs.
